A 16-1/4" Viola in Classical Period Set-Up
Constructed by David T. Van Zandt

This instrument is inspired by the alto violas of Andrea Guarneri. For comfort of the player, I abandoned the cheeked "cello-type" scroll favored by Guarneri for a more compact scroll of my own design.

The irregularly figured one-piece poplar back and poplar sides are quarter-cut from the same log and are quite light in weight. The decisions to use light weight materials and to use a compact scroll are intended allow the musician to hold the instrument more comfortably over extended periods during practice and performance. If you wish to learn more about this viola or about instruments I make please feel free to contact me.
